Redefining Definitions April 13, 2011

This prompt simply offers the group a word and its definition, according to the Oxford Dictionary. The word I chose this time was bootylicious. Oxford fell short on this one, as far as I’m concerned, and simply stated the definition as “Sexually attractive,” adding “adj. on the pattern of delicious.

Here’s what I wrote:

I usually swear by the Oxford Dictionary, but they’ve got the definition of bootylicious all wrong.

Sexually attractive? No. That would be the definition of sexy, hot, banging, or a babe. “The pattern of delicious” is a bit closer, but the true root of the word is in booty, African-American slang for butt, as in, “She’s givin’ you big booty,” or “His booty was something to behold.”

Licious, on the pattern of tasty, edible, full of flavor, or delectable. Prefix + suffix = delicious butt. Big juicy booty. Ass for days!

It was Destiny’s Child who helped the word gain international attention by calling out the male character in their song when they sang, I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly/My body’s too bootylicious for ya baby.

My definition:

Bootylicious: adj. Voluptuous, desirable, curvy, creamy, thick, beautiful and powerful.

Get with it, Oxford nerds.
